Former Aggie All-American Dillon Maggard to Represent USA at World Indoor Championships – Utah State Aggies
LOGAN, Utah – Dillon Maggard is one his way to Serbia to represent the United States at the World Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The nine-time Aggie All-American, who is in his third season as a volunteer assistant coach with Utah State’s track & field and cross country programs, placed third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 7:49.05 at the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships this past Saturday in Spokane, Washington.
“I am stoked,” Maggard said shortly after the race. “I have no reason to be upset. The last five months, I have had a good training block, been consistent and stayed injury-free. I have no complaints.”
Cole Hocker won his second national title in the event as he crossed the line in 7:47.50 to finish more than a second ahead of Emmanuel Bor (7:48.64) and Maggard.
“I was feeling pretty good,” Maggard said. “Even going into the last lap, I was kind of surprised. There was a lot of jostling and I was trying to make the right move. I wish I would have went a little bit earlier, because I was feeling good, but I can’t complain. It’s my highest finish at an indoor championship.”
By finishing first and second, Hocker and Bor earned their respective spots on the USA World Championship team. After the race, though, Hocker said he was undecided about whether he would run at the World Indoors, which will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from March 18-20.
Hocker eventually declined his spot on the team, which opened the door for Maggard to go.
Maggard, who is currently unsponsored, has enjoyed an extremely successful winter season. During the early part of December, the native of Kirkland, Washington, won the inaugural Cross Champs at Mount San Antonio College, hosted by Sound Running and Trials of Miles, which was held in Walnut, California.
One month later, Maggard placed second (out of 58 competitors) with a time of 30:34.00 in the men’s 10K championship race at the USATF Cross Country Championships at Mission Bay Park in San Diego, California.
