Tumbleweed fire in northern Los Angeles County forces evacuations – LA Daily News

A brush fire that broke out Sunday afternoon along the 5 Freeway in northern Los Angeles County grew to 1,000 acres, pushed by gusty winds and prompting nearby evacuations.

The fire was 10% contained by early Sunday evening, according to fire officials. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.

There were evacuations in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area only, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The recreation area, part of the California State Parks system, posted on Facebook it was closed because of the fire.

A fire evacuation center was set up at Hungry Valley Campground, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.

The Tumbleweed fire, near the 5 and Gorman Post Road in Gorman, was burning “at a rapid rate in gusty winds,” the Fire Department reported on Twitter.
